The sprawling town of Kawaguchi-ko (河口湖), set around the lake of the same name, is a great spot to hang out and enjoy what the Fuji Five Lakes region has to offer, including great mountain views.

Sightseers enjoy a view of Mount Fuji last month from a garden near Lake Kawaguchi

DAY 1: TOKYO – KAWAGUCHIKO (-/L/D)

Take the early bus to Lake Kawaguchi, one of the best places to enjoy the best view of Mount Fuji.

Upon arrival, meet with our guide at Kawaguchiko Station and start the trip to Okuniwa Nature Park, one of the richest in nature place among the places along the Fuji Subaruline (Mt.Fuji Tool Road), situated at 2,227 m above sea level. Spend the next hour trekking around the park and discover the plants that have survived the harsh weather and land conditions of the area. With clear skies, there might be a chance to catch a glimpse of Mt. Fuji.

Lake Kawaguchi

After the hike, proceed to the 5th Station, the starting point for hikers who climb Mt. Fuji. The place offers a commanding view of the Fuji Five Lakes area below, making it a popular spot even for those who are not intent on climbing the mountain.

The guide will provide an escort back to Kawaguchiko Station, and from there, continue on to the night’s accommodation.

Tonight’s accommodation will be in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese-style inn furnished with paper sliding doors, hot spring baths, tatami floors, and rooms with futon beds.

DAY 2: KAWAGUCHIKO – TOKYO  (B/-/-)

Today is a self-guided day.

After breakfast, enjoy the morning doing a bit of independent exploration before catching the bus back to Tokyo.

Suggested Self-Guided Itinerary:

Kubota Itchiku Museum: Located near Lake Kawaguchi, with a panoramic view of Itchiku’s beloved Mount Fuji, the museum is dedicated to Itchiku Kubota, the man who spent his life practicing tsujigahana, one of the techniques of shibori (tie-dyeing). Discover some of his signature kimonos hanging on wooden bars, reflecting the natural light that comes from the sun. Even the museum itself can be considered as a great artwork, with some of its pillars made from century-old cypress trees and its ceiling open so that the visitors can clearly see its wooden structure.

Kawaguchiko Museum of Art: The Kawaguchiko Museum of Art houses temporary exhibitions of Japanese and foreign modern artists as well as a small permanent collection of paintings and photographs featuring Mount Fuji.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba: A tiny village with around twenty thatched roof houses that serve as traditional handicraft studios, museums, local restaurants, and cafés.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nenba Village
Alternatively, take a boat ride on the lake or ride the Kachi Kachi Ropeway to an observation point near the summit of Mount Tenjo, from where Lake Kawaguchiko and Mount Fuji can be seen (during a clear day).
Head back to Kawaguchiko Station to catch the bus back to Shinjuku in Tokyo.
